Spill Pallets: What to consider when storing hazardous materials

It's commonly stated that just one drop of oil can pollute up to 270 gallons of water. In the United States, water contamination is subject to fines or even potential imprisonment. However, addressing the daily handling of hazardous substances is crucial to prevent such extremes. Often, there's uncertainty about the proper storage methods to ensure the best protection for both people and the environment. Let's guide you through what you need to be attentive to.

Hazardous Material Storage: Frequently Asked Questions

What are the key requirements for spill pallets in terms of preventing flammable liquid leaks?

Spill pallets must be securely sealed against the stored liquids and constructed from non-flammable materials.

WHAT DO I NEED TO CONSIDER WHEN STORING FLAMMABLE LIQUIDS?

The storage room must have permanent ventilation, explosion protection, and constructional fire protection.

What considerations should be taken into account when choosing the material for a spill pallet?

The spill pallet should be crafted from a material compatible with the stored liquids. For water-hazardous and flammable substances like oils and paints, a steel spill pallet, either galvanized or painted, is optimal. A spill pallet made of stainless steel or plastic is necessary when dealing with aggressive chemicals such as acids or alkalis. A helpful criterion is to inspect the container material in which the substance is supplied to determine the appropriate construction material for the spill pallet.

WHAT ELSE SHOULD BE CONSIDERED WHEN CHOOSING A SPILL PALLET OR DRIP TRAY?

Depending on their intended purpose, spill pallets need to fulfill diverse requirements. Spill pallets equipped with integrated forklift pockets are well-suited for transportation using a forklift within a factory or warehouse setting. Moreover, it is crucial to consider the collection volume. Regardless of the scenario, the spill pallet needs to undergo thorough testing and certification. Each weld seam on a DENIOS pallet undergoes inspection through the dye penetrant test.

WHAT IS THE MAXIMUM HEIGHT OF A SPILL PALLET USED TO STORE FLAMMABLE LIQUIDS?

A spill pallet should not exceed 20 inches to ensure adequate ventilation. However, technical ventilation options are available if a taller spill pallet is needed.

HOW DO I DETERMINE THE RIGHT CONTAINMENT VOLUME?

A spill pallet should have the capacity to contain the contents of the largest container or, at a minimum, 10% of the total stored volume. In cases where the storage of water-polluting substances is allowed in water protection areas, the spill pallet must be capable of containing 100% of the total stored volume.

WHAT IS AN OPERATOR RESPONSIBLE FOR WHEN HANDLING SPILL PALLETS?

  • The operator is responsible for ensuring correct use per the regulations.

  • Repairs/upkeep/maintenance.

  • The spill pallet must be kept free of water and contamination.

  • Damage to the surface protection must be repaired immediately (corrosion).

  • Regular inspections are needed at least once a week.

  • The condition of the spill pallet is to be visually inspected every two years.

  • The result must be recorded and presented to the water authorities if requested.

Secondary Spill Containment: Addressing Situational Challenges with Effective Solutions

WHAT IF I NEED TO STORE 2 DIFFERENT SUBSTANCES ON THE SAME SPILL PALLET?

Check whether combined storage of the substances is permitted. Our DENIOS Hazmat Manual includes a handy combined storage table to help you comply with the regulations.

WHAT I I DON'T KNOW WHAT I NEED TO BE AWARE OF WITH A POLY SPILL PALLET?

Poly Spill Pallets can be used in buildings and outdoors but must not be used in Explosion zones. When installed outdoors, the containment devices must be protected from precipitation.

WHAT IF A LEAK HAS OCCURED?

Clean up the leaked fluid using an absorbent material suitable for the hazardous substance. Take care to ensure that the type of absorbent material is appropriate to the leak. Absorbent materials are available in Oil, Universal, or HazMat variants. Find out which absorbent material is suitable for your needs here.

WHAT IF A HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCE HAS COLLECTED IN THE SPILL PALLET OR A NEW, NON-COMPATIBLE SUBSTANCE IS TO BE STORED IN IT?

The spill pallet must be visually inspected at least once a week. Remove the hazardous substance following the regulations using suitable absorbent materials. As an additional, practical monitoring aid, we recommend our SpillGuard® hazardous substance leak warning system. The handy SpillGuard®, which can be placed in any spill pallet, is easy to activate and triggers a visual and audible signal for 24 hours in case of a leak - giving an adequate warning.

WHAT IF I DON'T KNOW IF MY SPILL PALLET IS STILL INTACT?

Check the test certificate as well as the guarantee from the manufacturer. If you notice any signs of corrosion, the spill pallet must be disposed of following the legislation. To carry out a general sealing test, water can be poured into the spill pallet to check it is water-tight.

WHAT IF I NEED TO TRANSPORT MY SPILL PALLET?

Many spill pallets can be accessed from below, so a forklift can be used to transport from A to B. Some models are available with castors. If a floor spill pallet needs to be transported, this can be done on a pallet. In each case, ensure the spill pallet is not so full that there will be a risk of a leak during transport. If transport is necessary, where public roads and not just the works grounds need to be accessed, the legislation for the transport of hazardous goods needs to be considered.

What are spill containment berms and why are they important?

Spill containment solutions like berms and spill decking are tools and equipment designed to capture and hold leaks or spills of hazardous liquids. They are essential to prevent these liquids from contaminating the surrounding environment or posing a safety hazard to people in the area. DENIOS offers a variety of spill containment solutions, including spill decks and containment berms, to ensure safe and compliant storage of hazardous materials.d.
